Massachusetts Humane Society 1791

Obverse: Shield of the Society divided into three fields; above two rowing boats, two clasped hands (centre) below, a three-masted ship in a gale; for crest, a cottage with ribbon. Inscription: 'REFUGE'. Below, a ribbon with date '1791'. Legend: 'THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS'. Reverse: Within a border of rope: 'LEWIS STONE BOATSWAIN FOR RESCUING CREW AND PASSENGERS OF STEAMER GLAMORGAN FEB 16 1883'. Legend: 'REWARD OF MERIT COURAGE AND PERSEVERANCE'.

The SS 'Glamorgan' 1882, on a voyage from Liverpool to Boston with general cargo was hit by a rogue wave on the 14th February and the captain, 2nd officer, four crew meners and two stowaways were lost. All Glamorgan's upperworks were swept away and she began to take on water. The wreck was sighted by the White Star Line 'Republic' on the 16th and after the loss of one man and two boats, all 44 survivors were taken off 'Glamorgan' by the two remaining boats.

Lewis Stone (1848-1915), boatswain in the White Star Line, was born in Denmark, the son of a shipwright but lived in the United Kingdom for about 49 years, being based in Liverpool where he married Martha Magee in 1871. They had a large family, and at the end of his life he was working as a ship rigger in Bootle.
