Lifesaving award, Citizans of Baltimore
Obverse: The arms of the city, a cornucopia below, supported by two female figures, one (left) looking upwards, the other (right) facing, a pair of scales in her right and a scroll in her left hand. Inscription: 'Jas. McQueen STEAMSHIP MISSOURI Baltimore'. Reverse: Inscription 'Rescue of the DENMARKS Passengers and crew April 6th 1889'.
The steamship 'Danmark' 1880, carrying emigrants from Scandinavia to the United States was disabled in the Atlantic after a propeller shaft broke in bad weather. The US cargo ship SS 'Missouri' operating under a British flag, took 'Danmark' in tow, firstly aiming to reach St John then the Azores. Abandoning this plan Captain Hamilton Murrell threw his cargo overboard and took 700 passengers and crew on board. 370 single men were landed in the Azores. The remaining passengers reached Philadelphia on 2 May 1887.
