Congressional Medal

Obverse: Head of John Horn (left) Inscription: 'JOHN HORN JR'. Reverse: Within a laurel wreath, inscription: 'IN RECOGNITION OF HIS HEROIC EXPLOITS IN RESCUING MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN FROM DROWNING IN THE DETROIT RIVER'. Legend: 'BY ACT OF CONGRESS JUNE 20TH 1874'.

Awarded to John Horn - a Detroit boatbuilder. This is a copy made for public sale. John Horn (1843-1920) was born in Sidmouth, Devon, his family moved to Detroit, Michigan where his father opened a restaurant. John Horn moved to building, renting and selling small boats. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for saving 100 people from drowning in the Detroit River, many of whom had fallen in while getting on or off ferry boats. A duplicate medal was issued in 1904 after he claimed the medal had been stolen from his house in 1901.
