Mug
First period Worcester porcelain cylindrical mug with a transfer print in black by Robert Hancock showing a three-quarter length portrait of Admiral Edward Boscawen (1711-1761) holding a chart inscribed: 'Louisbourg'. On the other side the Admiral's coat of arms is shown with naval trophies behind it, and a further transfer showing two ships.
Boscawen's pose is after John Faber's mezzotint of 1747 from Allan Ramsay's painting with the addition of 'Louisbourg' to the scroll. The head derives from Joshua Reynolds portrait in the family collection of Lord Falmouth.
