Ministry of Marine & The Colonies Silver Medal
Gold, 'Ministry of Marine' life saving medal. Obverse: Head of Charles X (left). Legend: 'CARLVS X REX FRANCIAE'. Reverse: Within a laurel wreath tied with a bow. Inscription: 'MINISTERE DE LA MARINE JOHN PRATTENT LIEUTENANT DE LA MARINE ROYALE ANGLAISE. POUR AVOIR SAUVE DES MARINS FRANCAIS NAUFRAGES. 1830'. Fitted with a ring and a tricolour ribbon.
John Prattent was promoted Lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 10 March 1815 and from that year commanded the revenue cutter 'Cameleon'. He was awarded the French Ministry of Marine & The Colonies Silver Medal in 1830 - with Lieutenant Horatio James, he had helped to save ten crew members of a French ship wrecked near Hastings on the 20 January 1830. He married for the second time, Frances Mary Ross on 6 August 1828 at Margate and the couple resided at Deal. On 27 August 1834, the 'Cameleon' was run down by the 'Castor' and struck amidships. Lieutenant Prattent was drowned in the accident.
