Silver, 'Ministry of Marine & The Colonies' lifesaving medal. Obverse: Head of Emperor Napoleon III (left) Legend: 'NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR'. Reverse: An oval shield with inscription having as supporters a female figure (left) holding a laurel branch, and Mercury (right) with caduceus, both standing on a pedestal decorated with an olive branch (centre). Legend: 'MINISTERE DE LA MARINE ET DES COLONIES'. Inscription: 'AU CAPITAINE WILLIAM MORGAN COMMANDANT LE NAVIRE ANGLAIS MANGERTON. SERVICES A LA MARINE MARCHANDE FRANCAISE 1861'. Fitted with a loop and ring.
Awarded to William Morgan, master of the steamship 'Mangerton', Liverpool and Londonderry Steamship Company. Morgan found the French ship 'Euphrosyne' in a disabled condition sixty miles off Baltimore on the West Coast of ireland. He took her in tow but she sank. He succeeded in getting the five crew on board his own vessel in spite of bad weather.
