The French vessel 'Carioca', bound from L’Hâvre to Rio de Janeiro was wrecked below the Hermitage Rock Battery, Alderney on the 19 October 1865. The battery was then manned by the Coast Brigade of Artillery, who were woken at 3am by seven survivors. The remainder of the crew were clinging to a shelf 35 to 40 feet below. Gunner James Moore b. 1835 was the first to lower himself from the parapet of the battery by means of a gun tackle. In spite of being some yards away from the survivors and with waves breaking over the cliff, he got a line to them and began the rescue. The exhausted Moore was later relieved by Sergeant Fox and men of the 6th regiment from Fort Albert. Of the 29 crew members, 25 were rescued. Moore was discharged from the army in 1874 aged 39 years.
