Ministry of Marine Gold Medal

Obverse: Head of France with diadem (left). Legend: 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'. Reverse: An oval shield with inscription having as supporters a female figure (left) holding a laurel branch, and Mercury (right) with caduceus, both standing on a pedestal decorated with an olive branch (centre). Legend: 'MINISTERE DE LA MARINE'. Inscription: 'A MR EDWIN M.R. THOMSON H.M.S. UNDAUNTED. 1891'. (around oval) 'LA GOUVERNEMENT DE LA REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'. On Edge: 'OR'. Fitted with a ring, bar, buckle and dark blue ribbon.

Edwin Mark Rowe Thomson ((1862-1941) was born in Minster in Sheppey. While serving as gunner in HMS 'Undaunted', he was awarded the Ministere de la Marine Gold medal in 1891 for his part in helping to tow the French cruiser 'Seignelay' 1874 off a sandbank near the port of Jaffa during April 1891. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 4 June 1912 and Lieutenant Commander on 4 June 1920. He married firstly Mary Eva Nicholls at Stoke Damerel in 1888 and secondly Edith Amelia Richard at Bombay on 27 March 1912 while he was in charge of Naval Ordnance Stores there. He died in Plymouth in 1941.
