The 'Monte Carmelo' on a voyage from Cardiff to Castlemare laden with coal, was sighted in distress by the Belfast brigantine 'Golden Horn' . The Italian vessel had sprung a leak, had 5 foot of water in the hold, and one pump broken. Brigantine 'Golden Horn' 1868 of Belfast took on board all eight of her crew members. The medal was awarded to the master, Patrick Foy, born 1831, Killough, County Down.
