Lifesaving award

Charles Peak (1837-1884) was awarded a silver life saving medal by the Italian government for saving the crew of the Italian brig 'Carmela' on 7 October 1876. He was master of the barque 'Snaresbrook' 1855 of North Shields at the time. Peak was born in Combe Martin, Devon. He received his Master's Certificate in 1866 while resident in Newport, Monmouthshire. He had married, in Gloucester on the 5 November 1864, Jane Williams, of Newport, and the couple had three daughters there - Fanny, Nella and Clara. Charles Peak died at sea on 27 August 1884, on board the 'Schelde'. He was at that time resident in Blyth, Northumberland with his second wife Margaret.
