Lifesaving award
Obverse: Head of King Charles XIV (right). Legend: 'CARLUS XIV JOH.REX SVECIAE ET NORVEGIAE'. Reverse: Within a wreath, inscription: 'ILLIS QVORUM MERUERE LABORES'. Inscription on edge: 'MR.AARON BURTON OF DEAL FOR SAVING THE LIVES OF 13 SWEDISH SEAMEN, WRECKED ON THE GOODWIN IN JAN 1831'.
The 'Concordia' was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands on the 24 January while on voyage from St Ubes, Spain to Bergen, Norway. Her thirteen crew were taken off by Deal boatmen. Aaron Burton (1807-1862) was Cinque Ports Trinity pilot, resident in Deal.
