Messina Earthquake Medal
Obverse: Head of King Victor Emmanuel III (left). Legend: 'VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA'. Reverse: Inscription within an oak wreath tied with a bow. 'MEDAGLIA COMMEMORATIVA TERREMOTO CALABRO-SICULO 28 DICEMBRE 1908'. Presented with a certificate from the office of the Secretary of State to H.M.S. 'Euryalus'. Fitted with a ring and watered silk pale green ribbon edged with white.
A commemorative medal awarded to those who came to the aid of victims of the earthquake which struck Sicily and Calabria on 28 December 1908. 640 of these medals were awarded to the men of 'Euryalus'. The ship evacuated casualties and landed supplies.
