Reward for Zeal

Obverse: Head of Czar Nicolas II (left). Legend (In Russian script): 'H.M.Nicolas II, Emperor and Ruler of all Russia'. Reverse: Within half a wreath (left) inscription (right) (In Russian script): 'For Zeal'. Inscription on edge 'C. 1329. J. MURPHY, SEA. R.N.R. H.M.S. JUPITER'. Fitted with a loop and ring and white ribbon with one broad and two narrow red stripes.

HMS 'Jupiter' 1895 was deployed to Arkhangelsk as an icebreaker in 1915 and was the first ship to arrive there so early in the year (Alexandrovsk 20 February, Arkhangelsk 27 March). James Murphy, born1870, was a Wexford fisherman, son of John and Bridget Murphy. He was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve and served in HMS 'Jupiter' 1895 during the First World War.
