Uniface cross pattee with a medallion in the centre bearing an anchor within a wreath of oak and laurel. Obverse: Legend: "U.S.NAVAL CAMPAIGN WEST INDIES". Inscription on arms: 'SPECIALLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE 1898". Reverse: Inscription: "JOHN HILL, FIREMAN FIRST CLASS. RESCUING CREWS FROM AND IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO BURNING SHIPS AFTER THE BATTLE OFF SANTIAGO CUBA JULY 3RD 1898".
