Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840
Obverse: The head of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem and with hair tied in a knot. Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA 1848'. On the truncation: 'W. WYON R.A.' Reverse: Britannia seated on a sea horse, a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Exergue: 'W. WYON R.A.' Inscription on the edge: 'D.O'B. CASEY'. Inscription on the bars: 'CAPTURE OF THE DESIREE', 'EGYPT'. The medal is suspended by a plain silver clasp from a white ribbon edged with blue. It was awarded to Lieutenant David O'Brien Casey, when in his last post as a Lieutenant of Greenwich Hospital, though some doubts about it were raised in 1960-61 owing to alterations possibly made by the recipient..
