South Africa Campaign Medal 1834-53

Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria with a diadem, hair tied in a knot (left). Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA'. Reverse: a lion crouching to drink, a bush behind. Legend: 'SOUTH AFRICA'. Exergue: '1853'. No suspension or ribbon and fitted as a brooch with a pin fixed to the obverse. Inscribed on edge: 'COMMANDER BENJN.H. BRUCE. R.N.'

This medal was awarded for participation in three campaigns against the Xhosas between 1834-53. Commander Benjamin Holland Bruce RN has not been identified.
