British War Medal 1914-18

Awarded toHerbert Henry Alexander (1899-1958). Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18'. Engraved on edge: '1885 PTE H.H. ALEXANDER, KENT CYC.BN'. Fitted with a bar, ribbon missing.

Herbert Henry Alexander was born in Malling, Kent, the son of a dairy farmer. During World War I, he served with the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, Kent Cyclist Battalion. The Kent Cyclist Batallion was mobilised in August 1914. Now joined with other cyclist battalions, it formed part of an infantry brigade sent to India in early 1916, where it served with the Indian Army in Waziristan and Balochistan on the Afghan frontier. The bar on Herbert Alexander's India General Service Medal is for participation in the 3rd Afghan War 19 May to 17 August 1919. By 1939, Herbert Henry Alexander was working as a heavy motor transport driver. In 1926 he married Edith Mary Hodges and after her death in 1939, remarried Margery Lilian Kemp.
