1914-15 Star

A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G' with a 'V' within it. Fitted with a ring. Reverse Inscription : 'LT COMMR. E.B. ARATHOON, R.N.'

Lieutenant-Commander Edward Benedict Arathoon (1884-1958) was born in Capetown, South Africa. He entered the Royal Navy on 15 September 1899. His promotion dates were Sub-Lieutenant 30 April 1904, Lieutenant 30 June 1907, Lieutenant-Commander 30 June 1915. During World War I from 1915 to 1916, he served in HMS 'Wallaroo', a guard ship stationed at Chatham and later at Brightlingsea, where she protected the boom across the Swin anchorage. He was placed on the retired list on 1 January 1926 and was briefly called up in 1940 but replaced on the retired list during the same year.
