Victory Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscription on edge: 'LT.COMMD. E.B. ARATHOON, R.N.' Fitted with a ring, ribbon missing.
Lieutenant-Commander Edward Benedict Arathoon (1884-1958) was born in Capetown, South Africa. He entered the Royal Navy on 15 September 1899. His promotion dates were Sub-Lieutenant 30 April 1904, Lieutenant 30 June 1907, Lieutenant-Commander 30 June 1915. During World War I from 1915 to 1916, he served in HMS 'Wallaroo', a guard ship stationed at Chatham and later at Brightlingsea, where she protected the boom across the Swin anchorage. He was placed on the retired list on 1 January 1926 and was briefly called up in 1940 but replaced on the retired list during the same year.
