Prize medal: Royal Geographical Society 1835
Patron's medal presented to Captain George Back in 1835. The obverse depicts the head of King William IV and the legend: 'GVLIELMVS IIII D:G: BRITANNIARVM REX MDCCCXXX PATRONVS'.
The reverse shows Minerva with a globe behind her and a sextant at her feet, holding a scroll in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right. The legend reads: 'OB TERRAS RECLUSAS', and the exergue: 'ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY'. The inscription on the edge of the medal reads: 'CAPTAIN GEORGE BACK, ROYAL NAVY. MDCCCXXXV'. Back was awarded the Patron's Medal: 'for his recent discoveries in the Arctic, and his memorable journey down the Great Fish River'.
