Prize medal: Royal Geographical Society 1837
Prize medal presented to Captain George Back. The obverse depicts the head of King William IV with the legend: "GVLIELMVS IIII D:G: BRITANNIARVM REX MDCCCXXX PATRONVS". The reverse shows Minerva with a globe behind her and a sextant at her feet, holding a scroll in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right. The legend reads "OB TERRAS RECLUSAS", and the exergue:"ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY". The medal has a half glazed with a silver rim, which hides the inscription on edge.
