British War Medal 1914-18

George Stevenson was born on 25 September 1879 in Wimbledon. He entered the Royal Navy on 9 April 1896 as a boy 2nd class. He moved to the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1905 but re-enrolled in 1910. During the First World War he served from 2 August 1914 to 4 April 1917 in HMS 'Euryalus' and so took part in the Gallipoli Campaign. From 1916 the'Euryalus' was flagship on the East Indies Station and Stevenson returned to Britain while the ship was refitting at Bombay in 1917. He retired from the Navy in 1918 and in 1939 was employed as a butcher's roundsman in Chertsey delivering meat to local customers. He died prior to 1961, probably in 1960.
