John Petrie was born 21 Jan 1888 in Aberdeen and died 1919-1929 in China. A certificate as First Mate in foreign-going steamships was issued in Aberdeen 27 March 1912. On 24 February 1919, he applied for a replacement having mislaid it. At the begining of World War I, he was employed on vessels trading between London and China belonging to Jardine Matheson's Indo-China Steam Navigation Company. From 28 July 1915 to 1 February 1916 he was mate on the Hospital Ship 'Garth Castle'. His two war medals were issued in 1929 to an Edinburgh address - the card marked 'Deceased'.
