Legion of Honour, 5th class 1852

Obverse: (Centred). Head of the Republic. Inscription: 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1870'. Reverse: In centre, crossed tricolours. Inscription: 'HONNEUR ET PATRIE'. Awarded to Group Captain Charles Russel Jekyl Randel R.A.F.

Charles Russell Jekyl Randall (1879-1956) was born in Guernsey, son of brewer Robert Henry Randall. He was educated at Lancing College and trained at the Royal Naval College 1901-1902. He was promoted through the engineering branch and developed additional expertise in the construction of airships and aeroplanes. In early 1914 he oversaw the construction of airships at Barrow in Furness. Later in the war he served as instructor in theory and construction at the Central Flying School. In 1917, he was in charge of the supply and production of seaplanes. His final rank Lieutenant Colonel RAF. He retired to Guernsey, where he died in 1956.Suspended from a watered silk red ribbon. Mounted on a bar (court style) with four other medals.
