A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G' with a 'V' within it. Inscription on reverse: 'LIEUT. J.M. BOYD. R.N.' Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon. Mounted on a bar with three other medals.

Commander John Mossom Boyd OBE, RN (1887-1946), was born in Norwich and served throughout the First World War in HMS 'Princess Royal' from the time of her commission on 14 November 1912 until 3 May 1919. During this period the ship participated in the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank and Jutland. After Dogger Bank she became the flagship of Rear Admiral Osmond Brock. Boyd was promoted Lieutenant-Commander in April 1918 and appointed OBE for valuable serves in 'Princess Royal' (Gazetted: 11 August 1919). He retired with the rank of Commander on 20 April 1929, and died in 1946. He is buried in Bath Abbey Cemetery.
