British War Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18'. Inscription on edge: 'ENG. CAPT. G.W. BALDWIN. R.N.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes.
Engineer Rear-Admiral George William Baldwin (1871-1955) was the son of Thomas Baldwin of Gosport, Hampshire. He was educated at Portsmouth and later entered the Royal Naval Engineering College at Keyham. He served in the Benin Expedition of 1897 and was awarded the medal with clasp. Later he qualified at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and in 1917 was appointed Chief Engineer of Invergordon Dockyard. From 1919 to 1922 he was Chief Engineer of the dockyard at Malta and his last post befor his retirement in 1926 was that of Engineer Manager of Devonport Dockyard. He was appointed CBE in 1922 and CB. on retirement. In 1902 he married Maud Edith, daughter of Mr. Robert Clover.
