1914-15 Star
A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: G. with a V within it. Inscription Reverse: 'COMMR. J.C.H. LINDSAY, R.N.' Mounted in bar with four other medals. Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.
Captain John Colin Howard Lindsay (1877-1954) entered the Royal Navy on 15 July 1891. He was promoted to Commander on 30 June 1913 and Captain on 30 June 1918. He spent the early part of the war in HMS 'Nottingham', present at the battles of Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank and Jutland. She was sunk by 'U52' on 19 August 1916. His next ship was HMS 'Glorious' which participated in the second battle of Heligoland Bight. He promoted Captain on 30 June 1918 and commanded HMS 'Campania', an early aircraft carrier until her accidental loss on the 5 November that year, after which he commanded light cruiser 'Chester'. Lindsay retired on 10 August 1922. In later life he held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Clackmannanshire. He married Katherine Claudia Bruce Hamilton in 1918.
