Long service award, Corps of Commissionaires
Uniface badge. A sixteen pointed silver star with an enamel badge in the centre consisting of the Union Jack. Legend: 'VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIA LABOR OMNIA VINCIT'. Inscription reverse: 'E.C.MARKQUICK'. Hallmarked. Suspended from a foul anchor crossed by a gun, rifle and sword, on a white ribbon with maroon centre and blue edges.
Edward Christian Markquick (1878-1944) was born in Shoreditch, London, the son of a printer - Samuel Lorency Markquick. Edward Markquick joined the Royal Navy on 17 March 1898 and was rated Stoker Petty Officer from 1910. During World War I he served during 1913-16 in the battleship HMS 'Britannia' 1904, attached to the 3rd Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet. She saw no action during this period. During 1916 and 1917 he was at 'Attentive II' the shore base of the Dover Patrol. Marquick was demobilised in 1919 and by the 1930s was living on his naval pension and work as a commissionaire.
