1914-15 Star
A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G' with a 'V' within it. Reverse inscribed : 'LIEUT. J.C.CHAWORTH-MUSTERS R.N.R.' Mounted on a bar with three other medals. Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.
John Chaworth Chaworth-Musters (1875-1929) although coming from a fairly affluent family, decided to pursue a career in the merchant service. He gained early experience during the 1890s in British ships trading to New Zealand, including the Savill & Temple vessel 'Crusader' and Shaw, Savill & Albion vessels 'Akaroa' and 'Waiwera'. Chaworth-Musters gained his master's certificate in 1900. From about 1906 he worked for the Cunard Line and by 1914 was serving as first officer of 'Lusitania'. He held the following ranks in the RNR - Sub Lieutenant 7 February 1905, Lieutenant 28 January 1909, Lieutenant-Commander 28 January 1917. He retired with the rank of Commander on 30 August 1920. During World War I he served in armed merchant cruiser HMS 'Virginian' 1904 and monitor HMS 'Roberts' 1915. He returned to the Cunard Line after the war. He married Winifred Elinor E. Bateman in 1902.
