East & West Africa Medal 1887-99

Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria in a diadem and veil (left). Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA'. Reverse: a group of soldiers and Africans fighting in the bush for their fallen comrades. Bar: 'LIWONDI 1893'. Inscription on edge: 'G.R. ARCHER, S.S.A., H.M.S. HERALD'. Mounted on a bar with three other medals MED1285-1287. Suspended from a bar, and yellow ribbon with a broad black edge and two narrow black central stripes.

George Richard Archer (1871-1933) joined the Royal Navy on 31 December 1889. he was a ship's Stewards Assistant in HMS 'Herald' during the expedition Feb-March 1893 against Chief Liwondi. He left the Royal Navy in 1901 with the rank of ship's steward and ran a licensed hotel in or near Buckland Monachorum, Devon with his wife Beatrice Sophia (Symons). Archer served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Labour Corps during World War I - this unit had a catering role amongst other duties.
