1914-15 Star
A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G' with a 'V' within it. Reverse inscribed: 'SS-5515 T-S.S. MJR. G.R. ARCHER. A.S.C.' Mounted on a bar with three other medals. Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.
George Richard Archer (1871-1933) joined the Royal Navy on 31 December 1889. he was a ship's Stewards Assistant in HMS 'Herald' during the expedition Feb-March 1893 against Chief Liwondi. He left the Royal Navy in 1901 with the rank of ship's steward and ran a licensed hotel in or near Buckland Monachorum, Devon with his wife Beatrice Sophia (Symons). Archer served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Labour Corps during World War I - this unit had a catering role amongst other duties.
