Victory Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscription on edge: '2. LIEUT. G.R. ARCHER'. Mounted on bar with three other medals. Fitted with a ring and watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues.
George Richard Archer (1871-1933) joined the Royal Navy on 31 December 1889. he was a ship's Stewards Assistant in HMS 'Herald' during the expedition Feb-March 1893 against Chief Liwondi. He left the Royal Navy in 1901 with the rank of ship's steward and ran a licensed hotel in or near Buckland Monachorum, Devon with his wife Beatrice Sophia (Symons). Archer served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Labour Corps during World War I - this unit had a catering role amongst other duties.
