A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G' with a 'V' within it. Reverse inscribed: '139732 F.W. CHILVERS. A.B. R.N.' Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.

Able Seaman Frederick William Chilvers RN (1871-1969) was born on Trafalgar Day and he entered the Royal Navy in October 1886. He served during 1895, in HMS 'Royal Sovereign' -at that time the flagship of the Channel Fleet. Then he was in HMS 'Majestic' for the next five years. 'Majestic' was the largest pre-dreadnought of her time, when commissioned in 1895. He joined the Fleet Reserve Chatham in 1906 and re-enrolled in 1910, serving throughout the war until demobilised in 1919. His wartime career seems relatively uneventful after six months spent in HMS 'Hannibal' during August 1914 to January 1915 when she was serving as a guard ship at Scapa Flow. During 1918 he was a gunner in minesweeper HMS 'Munlochy'. In 1939 Chilvers had moved back to Suffolk and was living in Barsham and working as a chimney sweep. Before the war he had been resident there employed as a house painter. He had married Elizabeth Mary A. Spalding at Barsham in1897 and is buried at Holy Trinity, Barsham.
