British War Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'J.5682 C.V.GAGE A.B. R.N.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes.
Able Seaman Charles Vincent Gage (1894-1968) was born in Portsmouth and entered the Royal Navy on 13 March 1912, for 12 years service. He was rated Able Seaman from 12 March 1913. During World War I vessels he served on included 'Orotava', an armed merchant cruiser during 1918, 'Nesmar' a net vessel, minesweeper and stores carrier during 1918 and 'Attentive II', shore base of the Dover Patrol during 1919. Gage was invalided out of the Navy after the war due to neurasthenia. During the 1930s, he was working as a fishmonger in Sittingbourne, Kent where he was resident when he died in 1968.
