Royal National Lifeboat Institution silver medal 1824-1857

Royal National Lifeboat Institution silver meda awarded to James Fitzjames for saving a Custom House Officer from drowning at Liverpool.

Obverse: Head of George IV (left). Legend outer: 'ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECK'. Legend inner: 'GEORGE THE FOURTH PATRON 1824'. Below the truncation: 'W. WYON MINT'.

Reverse: Three men in a boat pulling a fourth out of the water, a broken spar below. Legend: 'LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP'. On a spar: 'W. WYON MINT'. Inscription on edge: 'MR JAMES FITZJAMES, R.N. VOTED 11 FEB:1835'. Fitted with a straight suspension bar and extra wide light blue ribbon. In fitted case of issue. Inscription: 'MORTIMER & HUNT....156 NEW BOND STREET'.

Commander James Fitzjames commanded HMS 'Erebus' during Sir John Franklin's last expedition of 1845.
