Jug
Pearlware jug, hand-painted on one side with a merchant brig under sail in black, on the other side a four line verse 'By untoutch'd (sic) credit/& by honnest (sic) Trade/The upright dealer/Eminent is made.' The jug is decorated on both sides with wreaths of hand-painted coloured flowers and leaves. There is a decorative iron red border at the neck.
The pithy inscription encapsulates how merchants depended upon their reputations to make transactions in a global market.
