Mug
Creamware mug, transfer-printed in black with a first-rate man of war at anchor, wearing a Union Jack at the jackstaff, an Admiralty Flag at the fore and a Royal Standard at the main. There is a Union flag at the mizen and an ensign at the ensign staff. Inscribed below: 'A First Rate ship of War with Rigging &c. at Anchor.' The significance of the flags is not known although they are the flags flown by the Royal Yacht up to the present day. During the 18th century they were displayed on a warship during launching. Their depiction on this mug may be somewhat fanciful.
