Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Gold Marine Medal 1872

Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'CAPTN. JOHN M. MAIN. S.S. CITY OF NAGPUR FOR GALLANT SERVICE. 12TH.13TH. SEPT: 1915'. In original case of issue. Fitted with cusped bar, blue ribbon and buckle.

Awarded to John Mennons Main ( (1862-1931) Master of the 'City of Nagpur' for his part in rescuing the passengers and crew of the French liner 'Euphrate' 1905, after the vessel ran aground at the entrance to the Red Sea in 1915.
