Jug
Creamware jug transfer-printed in black. Under the lip: 1) a ship wearing the American ensign, with a gun and merchandise placed below the sea. Inscribed on a ribbon: 'SUCCESS TO TRADE' and on the merchandise 'EVB No 43 TV N 6'. 2) A pair of compasses in a central roundel showing a gentleman in a country scene, between the arms. Above is inscribed 'KEEP WITHIN COMPASS' and round the edge 'KEEP WITHIN COMPASS AND YOU SHALL BE SURE TO AVOID MANY TROUBLES WHICH OTHERS ENDURE'. Small views of gambling, lovemaking, shipwreck, imprisonment are placed round the sides. On the compasses 'Know thyself', 'Bridle thy will', 'Remember thine end', 'FEAR GOD'. Below the roundel, on a cartouche, is inscribed: 'THE END OF THE UPRIGHT MAN IS PEACE'. Also a verse below 'Use what thou hast to do thee good / But see thou make no waste, / who vainly do so spend their own, seek other Men's at last; / Flee beastly Sloth the Bane of Life some honest Business do, / An idle Mind decays itself and Wastes the Body too, / Attempt according to thy Strength, close by the Shore to keep, / Tis safer than to hoist up Sails and launch into the deep: / Bereft of Riches sorrow not nor vex thyself in vain, / But hope the best perhaps thou may'st recover them again'. 3) A haymaking scene, a girl with a rake and a youth seated drinking. 'SUMMER', 'Or as they rake the green appearing ground / And drive the dusky wave along the mead / The russet hay-cock rises thick behind/In order gay'.
