Horatio Nelson, 1758 - 1805, 1st Viscount Nelson, Vice-Admiral of the White

Oval miniature, unframed, in watercolour on ivory backed with card bearing an identifying inscription. The sitter, wearing flag-officer's uniform, 1795-1812, is shown long bust-length, half-turned to his right but looking out at the viewer.

This is a copy from Hoppner's full-length oil of Nelson, completed in 1801, or a print from it, the first published in 1805. It is fairly well done as regards the uniform, decorations and general likeness, though the face has a slightly flabby petulant look especially round the lower jaw. The original oil (Royal Collection) has the Battle of Copenhagen in the left background, which is here simply a greyish neutrally toned one. The oil is also notable in that it shows Nelson as a rear-admiral as regards uniform detail, though he was a vice-admiral by the time it was completed. This miniature has a slight and old vertical crack in the ivory down the right edge.
