Horatio Nelson, 1758 - 1805, 1st Viscount Nelson, Vice-Admiral of the White

Circular miniature in watercolour on ivory, in a circular gilt surround set in a rectangular black-lacqered wooded backing, with a brass suspension ring and hanger in the form of a stylized leaf or spray, top centre. Nelson is shown, head and part left shoulder only, in left profile against a neutral blue background. The source is undoubtedly one of the prints deriving from the profile drawing made from the life by Simon de Koster in December 1800, of which Nelson himself approved. PAD4154 is an example of the original engraving by Burke which only showed the head and collar, but later recopyings added more of the shoulders. While this image is recognizable as Nelson and technically competent, the likeness is mediocre and the uniform detail inaccurate (especially the epaulette - which wrongly includes red). The frame however suggests a relatively early or mid 19th-century date.

This item was presented in 1952 through Worcester Public Library from the estate of Mrs C.B. Hooper of Kent's Green Court, Callow End, Worcester, and bears a typed label to that effect on the back of the frame.
