Horatio Nelson, 1758 - 1805, 1st Viscount Nelson, Vice-Admiral of the White
This is not strictly a miniature but a small upright format aquatint of the type known as a 'Baxter-print' from the maker, George Baxter, in a rectangular mahogany frame, probably French-polished, with fluted moulding and a concave gilded inner edge. There is a plain brass suspension ring fitting screwed at centre into the top edge. A chalk inscription on back of the frame reads '14/4' and another in ink which reads 'SR/-'. There is also a label with the name 'LORD NELSON'. The image is a copy of one of Abbott's versions of the portait of Nelson as a rear-admiral which he first painted in 1797. It is probably based on an engraving or another intermediate copy, especially given the light sky background, since all Abbott's oils are darker. The ship to the left appears in a number of the oils, such as NMM BHC2887 (which is the third finished version the artist did). The frame could be late-19th or early 20th century.
