Emma, Lady Hamilton, 1765-1815
Circular miniature in a circular gilt metal suspension locket, representing Emma Hamilton, bust length, turned to her left but facing out to the viewer. She wears a white dress with an off-white muslin or silk shawl held over her head by a chaplet of flowers and leaves. The image is in watercolour, with the figure against a green-brown background, and is a copy, probably from a print, of a Romney portrait (see PAD3237, which is an 1803 print version). The glass of the frame is now scratched. The glazed reverse contains brown silk and bears the painted initials 'NW', which is an NMM mark indicating the item is from the Nelson-Ward Collection, presented in 1947.
