A Royal Navy captain of about 1787-95, (formerly called Ferdinand IV, King of the Two Sicilies)
Oval miniature in watercolour and possibly gouache [support TBC] in a gold mount within a rectangular fabric-covered frame, the whole in rather worn condition. The previous identification of this item as showing Ferdinand IV of the Two Sicilies needs an explanation since it is clearly a man with no resemblace to him other than a long nose, dressed in what appears to be Royal Naval captain's full-dress unifrom of 1787-95. For images of Ferdinand see MNT0053 and 0054.
The sitter is shown, head and part shoulders, facing forward but with his head half turned to his left. He has blue eyes, mid-length white (probably powdered) hair swept back fom a high forehead, and wears a white neckcloth. The background is neutral but with dark hatching to the left and the whole item is rather light damaged.
