Captain Harry Harmood (Harmwood)

(Updated, May 2014) Oval watercolour portrait on paper in a moulded rectangular gilt display frame. It is badly faded from over-exposure to light. The sitter is shown almost half-length, half turned to his right, with his head in full left profile, wearing informally unbuttoned captain's full-dress uniform with his right hand tucked into the front. He has receding hair, probably powdered and tied into a thick queue behind. The background shows a sea horizon to left and a steep shore to right, which bears the signature 'J. Downman / RA / 1783'.

This item and MNT0103, which are framed as a pair, were received as 'Captain Harry Harmwood' and 'Mrs A. Harmwood'. However, there was never a captain of that surname and the man shown is therefore likely to be Captain Harry Harmood, who reached that rank in 1778: for further details of him see another miniature in the collection, MNT0123. The only element of doubt is that the two portraits do not closely resemble each other, allowing that MNT0123 is earlier. Despite its poor condition, the present image is a characteristic example of Downman's watercolour portraiture. It is not strictly a miniature, though he did do some.
