Thomas Young, Captain of Marines

Oval miniature in watercolour on ivory, in a gilt metal oval suspension locket, with a glazed back enclosing a woven pattern of dark brown hair. Previous record states there is an inscription on the reverse which reads 'RM 1801'. If so this can only be on the back of the ivory since the glass on the reverse, enclosing the hair, is engraved with a more complex monogram of (possibly) the four letters G,A,S,D, though not one easy to decipher. The sitter is shown bust length facing forward but with his head half-turned to his left. He wears red uniform with epaulettes and a pipe-clayed pouch or sword belt across the body over his right shoulder, and a white cravat over a black stock. He has blue eyes and his hair is powdered and probably tied in a queue behind. If the 1801 date is correct this is before the Marines became 'Royal' , producing 'RM' as their initials: here, therefore, they may be those of the artist. Foskett (1972) records no obvious candidates for the apparent date. A Richard Mabbett (b. 1760) is mentioned only by examples to 1781, one signed 'RM/1780' , and does not appear to have been as good as this. This miniature was bequeathed to Greenwich Hospital by a Mrs A. H. Digges, who may have been related to the sitter, but no receipt date is given in the last edition of its Naval Gallery catalogue (HMSO, 1922, p. 58).
