Martin (Thomas Byam Martin?)
This miniature is entitled 'Martin'. It is executed in watercolour on ivory with gum arabic and shows a man with a black coat and white shirt set against a red and purple background. His powdered white-grey hair is swept back and he has blue eyes. While Martin is a common surname, the image may be of Admiral Sir Thomas Byam Martin (1773–1854) as a young man, or another of the family. Both his father and son were naval officers but the fomer died aged 61 in 1794 and this looks like a younger man, while the latter was only born in 1803, for whom the dress would not be suitable given the sitter's apparent age. This miniature is mounted together with 26 others, however, the velvet covered mount is very lightly damaged. The miniature shows a man with a black coat and white shirt. His powdered white-grey hair is swept back and he has blue eyes. He is set against a red and purple background. [PvdM amendd 12/15]
