Horatio Nelson, 1758 - 1805, 1st Visount Nelson, Vice-Admiral of the White

Oval miniature in a gilt metal oval surround, set in an enclosing red leather wallet with gilt tooled decoration. This bust-length image of Nelson in flag-officer's 1795-1812 pattern uniform (no hat), against a brown background, is a fairly crude copy of one of Abbott's many versions of this portrait, of which the earliest were painted in 1797. It is probably based on one of the many engraved copies (sometimes poorly hand-coloured) which would partly account for various errors in the uniform, including the use of red in the coat collar.

This item ws presented in April 1942 by Edgar Newgass, with MNT0196 (which was slipped inside it) and MNT0197, both said to show Lady Nelson, though neither do. They were found among the effects of the donor's mother with a label that circumstantially suggested that this and MNT0197 at least might be German work. [PvdM 11/10]
