A young lady in a fancy bonnet, called Lady Nelson
A roughly cut miniature-sized oval watercolour and pencil sketch on card, unmounted, of the head of a blue-eyed young lady in a fancy bonnet. The bonnet is tied under her chin with a broad blue ribbon that goes over its crown, and she is turned to her right but looking to the viewer. This item was presented in April 1942 by Edgar Newgass, tucked into a the wallet holding a 19th-century miniature of Nelson after Abbott (MNT0195) and with another wrongly called 'Lady Nelson' (MNT0197).
Though a little similar to Frances, Lady Nelson (1761 - 1831), this is not likely to be her partly based on the sitter's apparent age and her blue eyes: Lady Nelson's appear from other images to have been brown.
