An unidentified Royal Naval lieutenant
Oval miniature in watercolour, probably on ivory, in an oval gilt metal suspension locket. The sitter is a young man with brown eyes and slightly unruly mid-length brown hair cut in Regency style, shown facing forward, head and shoulders, in 1787-1812 naval lieutenant's undress uniform. His black neckcloth bears a coral-coloured oval with a white centre, probably the head of a cravat pin, possibly in the form of a cameo. The background is a neutral grey, slightly hatched. It is regrettable that the sitter's identity is lost since his direct , slightly startled gaze and informal appearance make this a vivacious image: although a little faded, it is also of good technical quality.
